OK, I don’t get into a whole lot of TV shows because honestly I don’t find many worth watching anymore. I was a devotee of The West Wing and now only Scrubs and 24 hold that kind of attention for me (although I usually tape Scrubs and watch it when I get a chance. 24 is mandatory viewing.)
My fiancee started getting me to watch The Ghost Whisperer which I agreed to at first because Jennifer Love Hewitt is smokin’ hot (and Amy knew I thought that hence the reason she thought I’d watch it) and I ended up getting sucked into the show. It also helps that I’m a fan of Jay Mohr and he’s an integral part of the show.
Well, if you haven’t seen the show, you missed a heck of a season finale cliffhanger. I really like when a show does a cliffhanger that gets into your head without being heavy handed. You know, the finale where a car goes over a cliff or a building blows up and you have to wonder which ones survive the horror.
SPOILER WARNING (if you watch the show and haven’t seen the finale)
At the end of the show, you think all’s well with the world and you see the cast walking together because they were going to watch “the tall ships come in.” When they reach the curb, Jay Mohr’s character gets a concerned look as he views the road in front of them. When Hewitt asks him what’s wrong, he says “there six of us but there’s only five shadows.” The camera cuts behind them to show five shadows and then “BOOM! Outta here!”
Absolutely brilliant piece of writing for that ending.
So now Amy & I are sucked in to trying to figure out what it means. Is someone dead? If so, who? It is Mohr’s character because he has a new series next year? Is that what we’re supposed to think and it’s a red herring?
I love when a show can do a cliffhanger like that with a smile sentence and camera angle.
I can’t believe I’m actually about to say that I am going to be looking very forward to the premiere of The Ghost Whisperer this fall.
Darn you, Jennifer Love Hewitt. You’re eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil.
EDIT May 18: After having a chance to look at the version we had recorded in high def, it’s clear that Jim is either dead or about to die. The reason? In the final scene when the characters are lined up Jim is standing behind Camryn Manheim’s character and the kid who plays her son. All the shadows on the ground are the same height and same distance apart…no shadow between the two.
However, if you want to chalk that up to coincidence, you’ll notice that Jim turns his head from the left to the right as the other characters move their heads…none of the shadows move.
So either Jim’s dead or about to die or someone at the special effects lab screwed up big time. Or, perhaps, it was done intentionally to try and throw off people trying to figure it out.

Suuuuucccker ;D
yeah, so we were going through the scene frame by frame, and much to my dismay… it apears that Jim is dead. Which is weird because it looked like everyone could see him.
There’s a reason her name is Jennifer LOVE Hewitt.
I’ve never been able to get into the show despite JLH hotness.
I think it has to do with the involvement of James Van Praagh.
Of course I also work on Friday nights… my DVR is already dedicated to Battlestar. Grace Park … Tricia Helfer … HOT!
No No No.
Nobody sees ghosts except Melinda and her mom.
Jay saw 6 people and five shadows. He would not have seen Jim if Jim were dead. Jay is dead and doesn’t know it!
I agree with Matt. Jay could not have seen Jim if Jim was dead as he cannot see ghosts; in fact, he’s not really sure ghost exist. Before meeting Melinda, he thought that was all superstitious silliness by a bunch of easy to fool people. Melinda has shown him that strange things happen, but he’s not ready to take the leap to say, yes, they do exist.
Unless…he could ALWAYS see ghosts and like Melinda’s mom refused to accept the “gift”.
Ah hah!
Only problem with that is if you look a few moments earlier, Jay is talking to Camryn’s character and you can see a shadow for both of them. I doubt he could have died walking from there to the curb without anyone noticing it.
So in season two we learned that everything revolved around 5… If you look a little deeper everything does relate to 5… So 6 people and 5 shadows…??!!?? Why are professor Payne and Melinda holding hands? Why isn’t Jim by her side like he normally is? Instead he is with delia and ned. Why? Does that mean anything?
That is so gonna suck if they kill off the only guy who has ever loves her and understood her… I do not want her with the other guy if thats what they are planning. I have watched since day one and will not be Happy..
if someone is dead, is prof. payne, of course XDDD
if prof. was alive, he couldn’t see six persons…i love mohr’s character…xD
Acabei de ver esse episodio agora e tambem nao percebi o final! :S Tambem acho que o mais logico e o professor estar morto porque se assim nao fosse e fosse outra pessoa a estar morta ele nao conseguia ver essa pessoa..
Did you all notice that Melinda grabbed Pro. Paynes hand?
u idiot’s:
1: no one excepting prof. payne can be dead because he sees the other five.
2: prof payne can’t be dead because he is between melinda and delia and the shadows are near one to another , if his shadow was missing, then there was a big space between medinda’s shadow and delia’s ( he’s holdin’ melinda’s hand, dead people can’t touch material things without sescing their hand going thru).
3.their position(i mean order “melinda’s mother,melinda,prof payne,delia,ned,jim” means nothing!
UNSOLVABLE MISTERY !!!
If the missing shadow is on the end maybe it’s her mother? I just watched it and I’ll cry if Jim dies
Maybe they were going to kill the Prof off - with his new sitcom and all, but decided to leave it open for him to return. It happens.
That was a good Finale, but no-one has mentioned the town and spirits beneath granville, maybe its something to do with that. none of them are dead.
I think its simple, how can professor payne see six people when only melinda can see the ghosts, as the prof cant see ghosts and he sees six guys i think the prof is dead or something
