This was just released from the City of Springfield regarding the horrific tragedy in Kirkwood, Missouri:
The City of Springfield Mayor and members of City Council and the City staff express their deepest condolences to their colleagues in Kirkwood City government and to the residents of Kirkwood for the tragedy that took place there Thursday night.
It is horrific to consider that five public servants lost their lives in the course of doing the jobs on behalf of the City of Kirkwood. We are greatly saddened when events like this undermine our nation’s principles of conducting government in a free and open atmosphere where all citizens should feel they can participate with confidence in a safe and civil environment.
Our hearts go out to the families and colleagues of those who lost their lives as well as those who survived and are traumatized by this event. We offer our support and encouragement, as well as any assistance that could be useful, as the City of Kirkwood attempts to move forward in its government operations.
Mayor Tom Carlson said he has known Kirkwood Mayor Mike Swoboda for many years through their work for the Missouri Municipal League.
“He has always been outgoing and helpful to Mayors and Council people across the state,” Mayor Carlson said. “He is a person who cares deeply about other people and believes in public service to his fellow man. This event weighs heavily on all of us dedicated to public service.”
I’m still letting myself come to grips with it. I know there have been times when I’ve sat at council meetings and wondered if someone would walk in and go off. With our council members on that elevated platform they would be sitting ducks. I don’t know if a metal detector would be a way to go cost wise but it might be a good security measure.

It is a very sad thing. These men and women were serveing their communities and were brutally murdered. I am feel bad for all of the famalies involved and for the people of Kirkwood.
This is yet one more reason why we need more armed citizens!
“This is yet one more reason why we need more armed citizens?”
I’m confused… I thought you were saddened by the men and women who were brutally murdered while (sic) “serveing” their communities and you felt bad for the (sic) “famalies” involved.
Pretty sure it was an armed citizen who created this tragedy. The 2nd Amendment was to serve to keep the dirty British out of our homes in a time of war, not to fulfill your 1980s, Patrick Swayze movie fantasy…
